Education at Barleylands

Here at Barleylands we bring all the elements of learning together from start to finish - “From field to fork”. All of our activities and workshops are totally cross curricula and tailored specifically for your needs. We treat the trip like an all day project for the children and will adapt the level of learning to suit. Your children will learn through a real life situation which they will remember forever.

Here are some suggested themes for your trip. These can be applied to all Key stage levels from Foundation to KS4:

  • Diversification, customer care, marketing and debating our future (KS 3 & 4).

We can also allow time for children to let off steam on our bouncy pillow and in the adventure play area!  If you would like to include a ride on the train the cost is £1 extra per pupil.

National Curriculum areas covered within the activities:

  • Geography: Human effects on our landscape and the environment.  Soil, plants and animals.
  • History: History of Barleylands. Looking at historical machinery and equipment and  discussing how old methods have changed and adapted to become more efficient.
  • Drama: Role play.
  • Literacy: Reading, writing and discussions.
  • R.E.: Care of our world. Christmas and Harvest.
  • Science: Seasonal changes, life processes,  habitats, food chains, care of living things and wildlife.
  • Maths: Measuring  and plating up areas , growth and yield and food miles (distribution).
  • PSHE: Citizenship, where our food comes from and sustainable development.
  • PE: Animal movements and healthy eating.
  • Art & Design: Design of machines and equipment and drawing the farm.
  • Healthy Eating: Good and bad foods, exercise and cookery.
  • Plants and Animals: Life cycles and food chain, seasonal habits and habitats.

Barleylands Discovery Centre
Come and experience a sensory overload at The Discovery Centre. This fantastic converted barn is brand new for 2009 and has a cinema and lots of exhibits to touch and climb on! The Discovery Centre is themed around the past, the present and the future and divided into 5 zones including; our food and our countryside.
A great learning experience for everyone.

Cooking lessons for schools
Now that we have a brand new stainless steel kitchen in our Education Room it has never been a better time to get cooking here at Barleylands.
We also have 6 cookery boxes worth £200 each which you can hire free of charge and use in your school.

Barleylands seasonal events for schools to be involved with:

  • Easter: Bottle feed baby lambs.
  • Harvest: Collecting produce.
  • Christmas: Let Barleylands take the hard work out of organising your school Christmas activities. Star in the nativity with the animals (plenty of space for families to watch), visit Father Christmas and make an extra special Christmas card.

Cost:

£5 per person, 1 adult free with every 6 children, we are happy to invoice you before or after your visit. Please discuss when booking.

Every child who visits Barleylands with their school receives a free voucher for when they next visit!

We are a National Association of Farms for Schools approved site and have been inspected and approved by the Visitor Attraction Quality Assurance Service awarded by the Tourist Board.

We are also CEVAS (Countryside and Educational Visits Accreditation Scheme) accredited.
